Fifty years ago, one of the first African American students at UH, Lynn Eusan, helped create the African American Studies Program. Eusan’s desire for social justice extended beyond the UH campus into the neighboring Third Ward community where she also helped create the SHAPE (Self Help for African People through Education) Community Center, which continues as one of the most visible and involved community centers in Houston’s African-American community. Her time here was brief but her legacy is thriving.

A survey of Texas voters by the University of Houston Hobby School of Public Affairs found strong support for increasing the state’s share of funding for public schools, along with support for increasing several targeted taxes to pay for it.
